Moving the nurseries

GEDC4993ret.jpgGidi, the Head of Coral Mission has left us, he had to return to Israeland this isBart from Holland who replaces him.
The Nature Seychelles team is very cosmopolitan, we have Kevinfrom India, Calum from Scotland, Sam freshly arrived from England, David from la Reunion is the project coordinator, Colin Seychellois and I, Helen French who joined themtwice a week in a apprenticeship contract!

You already know that there are nowfive nurseries located along Cousin, on the east coast of the island.
It was decided to move these nurseries on the other side, on the northwest coast of the island in order to be protected from the Southeast wind which should start in May or June.

coral-nurseries.jpgThe nurseries are placed following a new plan; they are distributed around a square of 12m x 12m on which will be another kind of nursery. The new site is near a small reef, the team hopesthe participation of herbivorous fishin the cleaning of the ropes!
The site is previously prepared to receive the nursery; some metal stakes are positioned along the length and width to attach the structure. A diagram may be more explicit:

DSC03794The nursery is moving very smoothly;buoys are added to the structure before the stakes are off and the structure ishanged gently on the surface of the sea with the boat. Finally the descent of the nursery on his new place is done through an ingenious system of levers: a rope, fastened to the nurseryand placed undera stake on the ground, is connected to a drum full of water, then it is added slowly air into the drum, the ballast effect will bring the nursery into the depths.
